Wednesday Humpday Midday Music: Anika Nilles and Nevell – “The Age”

I’m going to see Rush in Chicago this weekend, so I thought I would post something from the previous work from their new drummer, Anika Nilles (rhymes with “kill us”).

I actually got into Nilles a bit when I was listening to a lot of Exivious, after their second album, Liminal, came out in 2013. Youtube’s algo worked rather well back then.

Light and bouncy, like something off of an Atelier Ryza OST. This is certainly progressive-friendly music but doesn’t overlap too much with Rush’s signature sound. What it does have in common with Rush is that it’s listenable despite its complexity. Not an easy balance but I like it when it lands.

  • With what little I know about band music, I confess I know drumming the least. All I can say is when it sounds appropriate to the music. Nilles does just that. This, against my certainty that a lot of female drummers on YouTube get promoted because they are cute, not because they are all that good. I’ve heard plenty of drumming that just didn’t sound right.
