Wednesday Humpday Midday Music: “Soul Catcher” by The Artificials

Something new for this series: an actual songs from an actual band.

Filmed on a budget at one of their shows, but to great effect. There’s something appealing about the “crowd view” footage, with shots of the band obscured by the audience and impromptu, guerilla blurriness. It reminded me of Circa Survive’s “Child of the Desert” video. Something about it seems to match well with the jagged, off-time, unpredictable rhythms slithering underneath the ethereal singing and ambient background melodies.

The abstract CGI footage works pretty good here, even if it doesn’t necessarily support the song theme (nowadays, I don’t think that’s a requirement). Animals As Leaders did the aesthetic really well with its gestating alien stingray whatever thing on their video for “CAFO.”
