Kind of a throwaway post, but in the last few days I made everything darker here at jd.com. The development environment I use at work is by default a white background and customizing the colors is hellish, so I leave it as is. I generally don’t like staring directly into flashlights so I thought I’d change what I’d have full control over, i.e., this site.
That darker screens save energy is actually not true, assuming you are using an LCD monitor. See here. It’s Science™!
As a reward for absorbing semi-useless information, please enjoy a bluegrass cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” by Ironhorse (HT: Mike Duran).

I don’t like dark backgrounds on blogs, but I particularly loathe black backgrounds. Gray is barely passable.
*Would you like the rest of my list of controversial opinions?
Well sure! Although I think that qualifies as a preference. I don’t know the industry standard but I would label a preference as something one mostly can’t account for, i.e., “matters of taste” as that Latin saying goes.
It’s more of an eye strain problem, actually. Aesthetics wise, dark backgrounds are noiresque.
Doesn’t a brighter background cause eye strain more for you? Or do both extremes?
Both, I guess. That’s why I’m adamant about reading e-books with e-ink. My blog would probably hurt my eyes if I had to read it because it’s harsh black on white. I find the white on black to be even more painful. As I said, yours is just passable with the almost-white on dark grey.
Honestly, did you like it the other way? I like the new colors but I’m not crazy about them. I could easily revert.
I didn’t mind it the other way. I didn’t really think about it, so it certainly didn’t bother my eyes.
I might revert back. We’ll see. I kind of like the previous colors a little better, too.
