Game soundtracks sometimes need better titling approaches, like this one here. They could at least give it a generic name like “Overture,” or “Theme from the Origami King,” or “Don’t Let the Previously Minor Henchman Character Fool You—He’s Gonna Add Some Hardcore Emotional Depth Later On.”
Whatever. I haven’t played every blessed Mario game out there, but in my 120 years on earth, I’ve played a bunch, and a lot of the songs on the Origami King soundtrack were unprecedented for the franchise. I know Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were symphonic, but there wasn’t so much a mishmash of instruments that you can hear in this song. A big plus is that you can easily pick out the bass guitar in the mix. It has that slightly punchy and emphatic growl that helps it cut through everything else. Too many bass tones can be too warm and “sitting back” with the percussion in rock genres, when it can add a lot of nice sonic dimension.
