Sci-fi and Fantasy Movie and Series Reviews, Part 15

Anon
The video record (people’s eyes record everything and everyone’s basic personal data is visible) of a spate of murder victims is replaced with the murderer’s point of view, so the investigator protag doesn’t know the culprit’s identity. Investigator-protag coincidentally comes across a woman who does not have any data. Hazard a guess as to whether she’s connected to the anonymous murders? Very strong Ghost in the Shell vibes from this one, but more so the series. The two original GitS movies are more about philosophy than solving crime, and I wouldn’t expect normal films to really care much about philosophy beyond ethics 101.

Clash of the Titans (2010)
The original was fun, despite the bad special effects. The new one was also kinda fun, despite the uninspired lead role. I remember this came out shortly after 300, and it tried to copy 300‘s iconic “THIS IS SPARTA” line with “RELEASE THE KRAKEN,” but it didn’t take. It’s a bit of a shame because the kraken in this version was very well done.

Prospect
Diggin’ for alien “gold” in a sci-fi setting. Was good in some parts, not so much in others. The protagonist was a young teenage girl who sometimes acted realistically, other times with superpowered maturity. Can’t it just be one or the other?

Resident Evil: Vendetta
There’s a list of sci-fi franchises that have somehow lived on past their expiration date, and exist as a constant stream of CGI movies. This movie is part of one such franchise, although I like the ending where the zombie apocalypse was reversed. You never see zombies get cured.

Gintama Live Action the Movie
An anime series turned into a live action film, so you can guess how off the wall it is. This was another Vicodin movie viewing.

The Silence
A silly horror film where the monstrous whatever hordes are attracted to sound, an element which was done much better in A Quiet Place. Paint by numbers religious cult antagonists, but they didn’t have tongues, so the leader couldn’t spout off some unbearable dialogue.

Annihilation
An army special forces officer returns to his biologist wife from a literal Twilight Zone, then she goes into the zone with four other women— and there’s an actual reason why the “soldiers” (the group are armed and trained but not professional soldiers) are all women. Partially horror but relies more on tension than gore. The Big Bad wasn’t so much scary or repulsive but mysterious, and the ending “fight” and its resolution were just as fascinating.

Father Brown
Based on G.K. Chesterton’s novels of the same name. An affable priest solves murders despite his simpleminded façade. Not sci-fi or fantasy, but there was one scene where a character mentions it’s strange that a rural Catholic priest comes across so many murders.

The Dark Crystal
One of the great non-sword-and-sorcery fantasy movies from the 80s, right up there with The Neverending Story. Kid-friendly without being jejune. There was the hint of a lot of interesting lore that was never fleshed out, but got treatment with the novels and the new series.

Black Mirror, Season 5
Only three episodes, but its worth it just for “Smithereens,” where a man kidnaps an employee of a fictional social media app, which he believes was responsible for his fiancée’s death in a car crash.

I recall seeing part of Anon, but got tired of the too explicit sex scenes. I think I found it hidden on YouTube under a different title, etc. Interesting story line, but ruined for me.

Yeah…the sex scenes were dumb. I don’t even recall a good reason for them to even be together like that, but I shouldn’t expect some things to follow normal logic.
