Men, arrayed on rays, vertex to vertex
Reach across the plane with probisci
Sleek and curious but blade-grass frail
A lateral-diagonal intermingling
God, as capstone, pours it downward
Perpendicularity, liquid, and unpredicatable
Few could apprehend from whence to where
Most retract their probing lines, prophesying danger
Only a few stay their hand to catch the downward flow

I dislike poetry but felt this was necessary.
I liked the poem. 🙂 What’s so wrong with poetry?
Poetry itself is fine. I just can never find it enjoyable. Maybe when I’m older?
I tend to agree on that one, Jay. There are very few poets that manage to catch my imagination. I’m just not a connoisseur of poetry. On the other hand, I have long refused to let snobs bug me about it.
I forced myself to read a few classic poetry works…notice I said “forced.” The prose classics seem more intuitive and natural to me.
Prose describes, poetry indicates, or at least that’s how I see it. If you’re a literal, just-the-facts-ma’am type, poetry can be annoying. And there’s far more bad poetry out there than good (a fair amount written by yours truly). But the sheer volume of bad poetry just might mean that it’s a more natural form of expression for a lot of us. We’re just not very good at it. English is such a clunky, clumsy language to begin with.
Music lyrics are poetry, aren’t they?
I’d agree with you, and yes lyrics are poetry. I was actually going to do a post soon on a favorite song, lyrically, of mine. Also, a friend of mine I was in a band with is an excellent lyric writer: https://www.jaydinitto.com/other-people-write-matt-clifford/
