Note the lack of the word “I”; it’s only used once. Yes, I (heh) know…David used “I” plenty of times in the Psalms—what, is God’s word not good enough for me? David literally was handpicked by God. He gets to use “I”. Anyone reading this, however, is no such special snowflake. You’re with the rest of us normals.

I like the lyrics. The music is part of the recent style of worship music, rather like the stuff at Life Church, for example, all of them mimicking that monster Hillsong Church in Sydney, Australia. I suppose we could trace that style to other roots, but Hillsong is where I first heard that style of play (in recordings; I never went there).
I think it’s really just modern pop/rock, and Hillsong was probably one of the first to bring it into a worship setting. It’s a fairly inoffensive style so it could appeal to most folks without making them uncomfortable. It can produce a lot of bands that sound the same. Some of my favorite albums are this style…a lot of making the stuff decent depends on the strength of the songwriters, rather than relying on the genre’s conventions.
For someone my age, it’s distinctly different from the older rock. There’s an added layer of sound in the guitars; even the vocals are passed through the soundboard differently. The whole thing carries a noticeably different tone, so it’s definitely much later. To be honest, I really don’t like it, but there aren’t that many of my age left paying attention. It’s really popular with those half my age, though, so it is pretty safe.
